QuakeWorld Wiki

For those that don’t know the phenomenon called Wikipedia visit the original Wikipedia which is one of the 10 largest sites on the internet.

The QuakeWorld Wiki has been a success from the start with contributions almost every day, but there is more to be done. Therefor we will give you the tools and inspiration that you need for a few minutes of meaningfull contribution.

If you don’t have the time, you can just read a little about how the contributors think and handle most stuff.

Purity made a nice guide to go with the article: How to add your own wiki profile

Here is an excellent player profile

There are lots of things that needs cleanup for e.x:

And feel free to at least fill in your own profile :) and if you don’t know how to get started fire up your favourite IRC client and join #qwdrama.

Few questions to one of the contributors; Record

Why even bother?

Well good question :> the main reason was that it would be nice to Google for that like in 2027 and say to son: Hey look on what papa was wasting his time besides of partying when he was young :<

What do you think a complete quake wiki would bring to the community?

Something to read for qw-nolifers? :E some good reminiscences in future I think.

He also added that he likes the doom2 wiki http://doom.wikia.com/wiki/Entryway with the punishing descriptions and screenshoots.

Purity didn’t want to be worse.

Hello, what is the motivation behind contributing to the wiki?

I’ve got to say that my main motivation to contribute to this wiki is to create an archive that is as complete as possible. A few years ago the thought crossed my mind more than once to make a complete index with all the tournaments, clans and players that have been around but I decided it was a near impossible task since there are way too many. Now I’m helping to build this archive for real on the wiki to make sure that all the information and screenshots that I still have from old leagues won’t get lost. For example I made the pages covering leagues of which the official sites are offline like Villains, early NQR and SD seasons including playoff trees and screenshots, there are a few missing so if anyone has them check out the wikipages to see what is missing and upload them!

Do you think we can attract more contributors in some way, or do they just come naturally?

With a bit of common sense you can tell that contributors don’t come out of nowhere. A lot of players haven’t even heard about the wiki yet that’s why I think an article like this can be a great help to make sure that more people will know where and what it is. There are many things that only individual players might remember, for example things about what clans they have played in through the years and who their teammates were. Especially these days now that a lot of the oldschool players quit it would be great if everybody creates or completes their own player page, those of their ex-clans and tournaments they played in, it’s the idea of a wiki, all things together make a complete database.

The combined knowledge all the players have about clans, past tournaments and lans is enormous, it’s impossible to make this happen with just a few people because they won’t know everything and it would take years to write it all down. That is the reason I hope a lot of people will add their own profile and history, it shouldn’t take much time but if everyone does it, this is thing is going to be great.

Soma had some things on his mind too

Any page you are especially pleased with?

Yes, I think the NQR page as well as the pages it includes are fantastic. So much information about all the Seasons all the way back to Season 1 including results and everything. Phil also made some nice entries regarding maps and basic stuff like rocket jumping etc. - Always a nice read. I’m also very satisfied with my first larger contribution concerning the current Ownage Tournament.

So many users so few contributors. what do you think is the main difference between them two?

I don’t actually think there’s a very large difference at all. It doesn’t take vast scene-knowledge and it requires virtually no experience to make any additions to the Wiki. I think a lot of people are simply unaware of how easy it is to actually contribute. Not much can go wrong as long as you somewhat stick to the templates. People should just go that extra step and try it out themselves. Maybe some people get scared off by the fact that you have to register to
make any contributions. But I’m not sure I’d want to change anything about that. Registering takes about 10 seconds and it’s also nice to know who exactly is contributing. Plus I assume it also keeps the occasional lamer from sabotaging entries.

I’m sure you aware that contributing to the wiki is nice to the quakers out there, but does it bring you any inner peace, or is it just hard work?

Well I wouldn’t exactly say it’s hard work. There’s the occasional annoyance when you realise that someone made an entry but did’t check if all the links he included lead to the correct pages. Like when theres more than one player with the name “Dread” for example, then you should make sure that your Polish Dread doesn’t link to the Swedish Dread and so on.
But all in all, I actually think it’s somewhat fun to add stuff. It’s a good feeling when you go to a clan-entry and see a list of players, but then you click on a certain player and the respective clan isn’t added to the player’s clan history. You add the clan and think “Yay, another part of the puzzle added!”.

Well okay, I might be exaggerating, but it’s still nice to be part of the crew that is expanding the quakeworld cobweb. And when you’re playing someone in, lets say the Ownage Tournament, it’s nice to be able to have a place where you can look up your opponent. You see what clan
he plays/has played with and so on. And then you click your way through the wiki and realise that “WTF, player A from Hungary and player B from Sweden used to play in the same clan a couple of years ago. Who would have thought?”. By contributing I am also automatically using the Wiki and it’s not a huge deal to take a couple of minutes/seconds off your time when you notice theres something you can add. Perhaps it’s just my history-fetish, but I enjoy reading and contributing to this great game’s background and scene.

Do you have any plans for adding more stuff/info/whatever to the wiki?

Not really. I thought it would be nice to add pages for QW movies. People could see how long the movie is, how big in file size, what players are involved, whether it features frags, tricks or both, what software was used to create the movie, what music is in the movie and so on. People could check the respective movie-entries and then decide whether or not they’re gonna go through the process of downloading 600mb, which for some people is still a lot due to bandwidth or traffic limitations.
Other than that, I’m just going to continue doing what I’ve been doing so far: Use the Wiki and add stuff if I can/have the time.

Phil got the last words

What is the main motivation for contributing to the wiki, do you feel like you have an obligation or does it come naturally?

I feel like I might have some extra knowledge to share with others, and if I have the free time and nothing else really to do, I am happy to put it on the wiki for others to read. I think wiki is a nice way to maintain information, which is why that’s how I am keeping my personal site now :) http://quakephil.com/ <- note shameless promotion of webiste 8)

Is there anything that can’t be done?

Certainly, there are some things that can not be done, because that is how they are defined. You can not make a square circle, etc.

Do you have any plans for the wiki, except world domination?

I don’t think this wiki will achieve anything even coming close to world domination, but I hope it has enough of an impact for new people to come to QuakeWorld, read some pages, learn something, and be intrigued enough to stick around. I also like to touch up some articles, add a bit of trivia here or there, fix the formatting, and start some stubs with raw data for others to make into pretty pages…

Does it turn you on when you see a wikipage you created yourself? (courtesy of Purity)

Mmm, no, I don’t get an erection or anything.

I remember xsreality a few years ago linked to a Quake Timeline, which contained detailed accounts of all the major LAN tournaments going back to 1996, including the winners of the tournaments. The accuracy was impressive - it would be good to get that knowledge imported if anybody has a link.
