Trick maps reviewed

FFA/1on1/2on2 and 4on4 isn’t the only way to play QuakeWorld, there are lots of way to have fun in qw without even having any internet connection.

Some days ago I browsed the servers and noticed some random guy playing a map I din’t recognize called zediit. Curious as I am I quickly joined the server to find out what this noob was doing. To my surprise, the map was an awesome trick map which I later found myself trying to complete for over 2 hours.

The author of the level is zedii, I also found out that he had made another trick map called 2bfree. There has been a number of trickmaps available at servers a while but nothing like these two. The innovation and difficulty of these two maps really made me stuck for hours.

These maps are really fun and newthinking, for those who haven’t tried em’, im gonna write you a little review.

2bfree - So you want to bunny? (download/website)

This maps might seem simple/boring at first glance, on big room and some blocks “no big deal”. However, the goal is to reach the teleport high up at the wall BY ONLY BUNNY JUMPING. This challenge takes some time to complete, first you have to figure out the order in which you must jump to come to the higher level of blocks. Then you must learn to jump through it with full speed but not too fast or you will miss the nextcoming platform (you really have to take out the turns at some points).

Just the fact that it is possible to reach that height by only jumping and get the speed required to jump between those last set of blocks is awsome!

Difficulty: Very hard

zediit - Zedii Trick 1 (download/website)

The map consists of five different levels, each requiring both movement and aim using a different weapon for each level to complete them.

Level 1 (Shotgun)

You have to shoot the targets and jump to the block that comes out of the floor and once landed yet again shoot the next target until you have reached the level end.

Even though this is the first level, it isn’t easy before you have given it a couple of tries.

Level 2 (Super nailgun)

This level is very irritating at start. You have to jump the small blocks at the same time firing SNG on the blocking objects so that they move to the side clearing your way to the exit on the other side of the map.

Level 3 (Rocket launcher)

Most of the time trying to complete zediit for me was spent on this level. You have to shoot and get the rockets inside (next the red arrow) the small boxes in order to make the block appears so that you can jump through the level. You have to maintain full speed in order to complete the last jump!

Level 4 (Grenade launcher)

This level is very strange but also very funny. Use GL to open the blocking bars clearing the way to the exit.

Level 5 (Lightning gun)

Last (and hardest) level on this trick map. You have to shoot the blocking bars using LG at the same time maintaining a high speed and jump on the right places (non-teleport) to complete the level.

It took me about 3-4 hours and alot of pain in my thumb (+jump on space) to complete this map and it was great fun!

Difficulty: Very hard

I’m very likely going to start creating trick maps as soon as I feel I have got the time. Maybe trick maps combined with slide which was very popular some year ago. I really like the puzzle idea that zedii uses in zediit.
