Ignition Tournament Ignites quake newbie action

Wednesday 27th June, 2007 | No Comments »

This very morning the signups for the new Ignition tournament opened. The tournament is the first of it’s kind, it’s only for people who haven’t played for a long time (shame on them!), namely those who have played for six months or less. So far we have seen a lot of first timers signing up, most of them have played some kind of Quake ® before. During the short period of time that the signups have been opened so far a quite astonishing number of 32 players put their names on the competitor list.

Let’s hope for a 64 player bracket or maybe even 128! The irc-channel #qwrookie has been swarming with people asking how to get quake running and pimped out, I like it!

Quakecon Nears

Recently I posted on the official Quakecon forums about playing Quakeworld during the event. Surprisingly, there has been a relatively good response from players outside the QW community. Things are looking good for Quakecon 2007.

Top 10 Most Disgusting QW Graphics

Making QuakeWorld open source later led to a new addition to the engines which allowed users to customize the look of the game in any way they wanted. You can have custom textures on walls and materials in game, custom particles, lots of parameters for effects, lighting, console font, head up display font and images, crosshairs, skyboxes, console background and so on. This lead to a new movement - QuakeWorld graphics or QuakeWorld GFX. Users like to customize their game very much and they do so.

However to cook the best meal ever you cannot just take the best ingredients available and put them together in one pot. Also to cook a delightful cake you don’t use the most burning red pepper available. The customization lead to a lot of dreadful combinations and this article is my pick of the top ten most disgusting QuakeWorld custom graphics I’ve ever seen.

Family crisis in Firing Squad?

Tuesday 12th June, 2007 | 13 Comments »

We have been informed that the possibly best 2on2 duo in QuakeWorld, razor and reppie, has run into a family crisis. The sources tell us that the crisis has been caused by the fact that razor has won both EQL and NQR with his new temporary team, Dota All-Stars Guys. Winning these both highly respected awards in a row is something that the Firing Squad team have never been capable of doing. On the other hand, reppie has been playing with the mainly Finnish team, clan Malfunction. They have definitely performed a lot better than last few seasons and without a doubt reppie should be thanked for this.
